Choose which sites can show chat
Your store domain and its www version always show chat. Add other sites, such as landing pages or a second shop, on the widget's Behaviour tab.
Last updated 2 min read
The chat snippet is public, so Hushdesk only opens chat on sites you approve. Your store's own domain is approved automatically. Anything else, such as a landing page on another domain or a second shop, you add yourself.
Before you start
- Who can do this: owners and admins.
- Plan: all plans.
- What you need: the full address of each extra site, starting with
https://. - Time: a minute.
Step by step
- Check your main domain under Settings > Store > Website domain, for example
madammuse.co. - Open Settings > Chat widget and the Behaviour tab.
- Find Other sites allowed to show the widget. The hint under it confirms which domain and
www.version are always allowed. - Type each extra site on its own line, for example
https://shop.example.com. - Press Save changes.
What happens next
The widget opens normally on every allowed address. On any other site, the chat window shows This chat is not available on this site. and no chat can start.
Hushdesk also records which allowed sites the widget has loaded on. You can see them under 3. Check it’s live on the Install tab, each with its "last seen" time.
How addresses are matched
| You enter | Allowed |
|---|---|
Store domain madammuse.co |
https://madammuse.co and https://www.madammuse.co |
https://shop.example.com |
Exactly that address, any page |
https://landing.example.com:8443 |
That address on that port only |
Matching is on the scheme, host and port, never the page path. A trailing slash is removed and addresses are saved in lower case.
Common setups
| Situation | What to add |
|---|---|
| One store on its own domain | Nothing: fill in Website domain under Settings > Store |
| A landing page on another domain | That landing page's address |
Testing on a Shopify .myshopify.com address |
https://your-store.myshopify.com |
| A help site on a subdomain | https://help.yourstore.com |
Tips
- Always include
https://.shop.example.comon its own is not accepted. - Add each subdomain separately. Allowing
example.comdoes not allowhelp.example.com. - Up to 20 extra sites can be listed. If you need more, consider whether those sites belong in their own workspace.
- If you change your store's domain, update Settings > Store first, so chat keeps working on the new domain.
Troubleshooting
"Sites look like https://shop.example.com"
An entry is not a bare site address. Remove paths, spaces and query strings, and include https://.
"This chat is not available on this site."
The visitor's address is not on the list. Compare it with your entries, including www. and the scheme.
"Only admins can change the chat widget"
Ask an owner or admin to add the site.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my chat say it is not available on this site?
The widget only opens on sites you allow. If the page's address is not your store domain, its www version or one of the extra sites you listed, the chat window shows This chat is not available on this site. Add the address on the Behaviour tab and save to fix it.
Which sites are allowed to show my chat by default?
Your website domain from Settings, Store, in both its plain and www forms over https. For example, a domain of madammuse.co allows https://madammuse.co and https://www.madammuse.co. Every other address needs to be added by an admin on the Behaviour tab.
How do I allow chat on a second domain or a subdomain?
Open Settings, Chat widget, Behaviour and add the full address under Other sites allowed to show the widget, one per line, such as https://shop.example.com. Press Save changes. You can list up to 20 extra sites, each with its https or http prefix.
Why does Hushdesk limit which sites can show my chat?
The snippet is public, so anyone could copy it onto their own pages. The allowed list stops other sites from opening chats that land in your inbox. It also keeps your team from receiving chats from test pages or copies of your store you did not intend to use.
Do I need to allow my myshopify.com address?
Only if shoppers reach your store through it. Most stores use their own domain, which is allowed through Settings, Store. If you test on the .myshopify.com address or some visitors arrive on it, add it as https://your-store.myshopify.com under Other sites allowed to show the widget.
