The Hushdesk chat widget adds a chat button to your website. Shoppers press it, write to you, and the message lands in your inbox as a chat ticket. Installing it takes one line of code and works on almost any website.
Before you start
- Who can do this: owners and admins change widget settings; anyone with access to your site's code can paste the snippet.
- Plan: all plans.
- What you need: access to your site's theme, template or "custom code" setting. Fill in your website domain under Settings > Store first, so the widget is allowed on it.
- Time: about 3 minutes.
Step by step
- Open Settings and choose Chat widget under Channels.
- Open the Install tab.
- Under 1. Copy this code, press Copy. The snippet is one
scripttag with your workspace and brand ids. - Open your site's code or settings. On builders such as Wix, Squarespace or Webflow, look for "custom code", "code injection" or "footer scripts".
- Paste the code just before the closing
bodytag, so it is on every page. Save or publish your site. - Open your site in a new tab. The chat button appears in the corner.
- Back in Hushdesk, look under 3. Check it’s live. Your site's address appears with "last seen" and a time.
What happens next
The chat button shows on your site with the look you chose on the Style tab. When a shopper writes, a new chat ticket appears in your inbox at once, and your replies show in their chat window live. See Answer live chats in real time.
The Home checklist ticks off Add live chat to your store the first time the widget is seen on a site.
What the snippet looks like
<script src="https://your-hushdesk-address/widget/v1/loader/helpdesk.js" data-workspace="…" data-brand="…" data-api="https://your-hushdesk-address" defer></script>
Always copy your own snippet from the Install tab: the ids are unique to your workspace.
Tips
- Paste the snippet once in a shared footer or layout file, not page by page.
- Style the widget before you install it. Every later change reaches your site by itself. See Style your chat widget.
- If your site uses a cookie bar or sticky "add to cart" bar on phones, lift the button so it does not cover them. See Customise the chat button.
- On Shopify or WordPress, follow the dedicated guides: Shopify, WordPress.
Troubleshooting
"This chat is not available on this site."
The page's address is not on the allowed list. Fill in your domain under Settings > Store, or add the address under Other sites allowed to show the widget. See Choose which sites can show chat.
"Not seen on your site yet. Open your store after pasting the code; it shows up here within a minute."
Hushdesk has not seen the widget load yet. Open your site, wait a minute and refresh the Install tab. If it still does not appear, see Check that chat is live on your site.
"Only admins can change the chat widget"
Agents and viewers can copy the snippet but cannot save widget settings.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add Hushdesk live chat to my website?
Open Settings, Chat widget and the Install tab, press Copy next to the code and paste it just before the closing body tag on every page of your site. Most site builders have a custom code or footer scripts setting where one paste covers every page. The chat appears within a minute.
Will the chat widget slow down my website?
It is built not to. The loader script uses defer, so it never blocks your page from showing, and it waits until the browser is idle before it loads the chat window. The full chat window only downloads when it is needed, and the settings are cached for five minutes.
Which website builders does the Hushdesk chat snippet work with?
Any site where you can add a script tag. That includes Shopify, WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and hand-built sites. On builders, look for a setting called custom code, code injection or footer scripts, and paste the snippet there so it loads on every page.
Do I need to paste the code again after changing the widget's colours?
No. The snippet only says which workspace and brand to load. Every style and behaviour change you save in Settings, Chat widget reaches your site by itself, usually within five minutes because browsers cache the settings for that long.
Can I put the chat widget on more than one website?
Yes. Paste the same snippet on each site, then add every extra address under Other sites allowed to show the widget on the Behaviour tab. Your store domain and its www version are always allowed. Other sites show a message saying chat is not available there.
Do shoppers need an account to chat?
No. Visitors can start a chat straight away without signing in. If you want an email address first, turn on the short form before the chat starts on the Behaviour tab. Logged-in shoppers can also be identified by your site so agents know who they are.
